I stumbled across a facebook page dedicated to random facts about Danish.... Here's a smattering :)
Apparently one way of saying Thursday is "Lille fredag" - which literally means "small Friday".
Pronunciation.... WOW. This is the single reason why if you're not speaking Danish as a first language... it will always show. Of course this is true of most languages... but it's maybe even more true than true with Danish. Copenhagneners have the charming little tendency of swallowing their words even more than the average Danish speaker:
Most Danes pronounce these four words the exact same way:
1) værd = worth
2) hver = every, each
3) vejr = weather
4) vær = (please) be
Danish: Skæg for sig og snot for sig =
English meaning: Don't mix business with pleasure,
Literally = Keep the beard (or: fun) and snot apart

It's almost Thanksgiving! I'll be missing my family when it comes around but I'm going to have a gathering with friends here and I'm really looking forward to that. I've had two Thanksgivings abroad before - one in India and one in Croatia...
In India we kinda just had some extra idly for breakfast in the grand tradition of eating a lot on Thanksgiving. And then I think we sorta talked about thankfulness on the walk to school... My mom sent me a family photo signed by everyone taken on thanksgiving that reached me in time for Christmas. I think it was much harder for them to have me gone than it was for me to be gone that year. Not to say that I'm that big an important super star - but it was my mom's first holiday with one of her babies away whereas I was in such a different mindset and world that it felt very distant.
Croatia was odd. I was there because our Schengen visas from studying abroad in Switzerland had expired so we had to leave the EU. We were all at a strange semi-abandoned (it was way off tourist season) hotel on the coast. The chef at the hotel knew there were a bunch of Americans and very kindly attempted a Thanksgiving meal. It was at that point that I realized that it really is a particular cuisine! I hope I haven't freaked out my friends too much... we're doing it semi-potluck style but some of them are a bit intimidated by getting the food "right". If you're reading this, any of you- please know you can't mess up!!! I'm pretty set on having pumpkin pie.... so I'll make it myself. Other then that it will just be fun to share shanks with people.
Skype really is amazing... so I'll be able to say hi to these people, including the littlest Minor! She was wide awake and super active before I thought to take screen shots. I can't wait for the real live baby-time!
