Meanwhile in Finland:

So I'm looking on Wikipedia to read about the differences between North American and Northern European moose and I announce that moose have really sensitive upper lips and my Finnish friend goes:

"I know. They're very soft. I've touched dead moose lips."

Then...

"We had this this old prayer house in my village... It hadn't been used for about ten years so we turned it into a slaughtering house for mooses. That's where my cat used to run away to!"

We then had a little debrief on how to survive various animal attacks. Bears, moose, wolf... Got it covered. The anonymous Finn demonstrated how to back away with great feeling.

Now I'm showing her "A Christmas Story" and realizing just how American it is. one of the kids is dared to lick a flag pole in winter. She says, emphatically, "oh no! Everyone's gotten stuck to the pole!" As if it were the most universal human experience imaginable.

"You can eat the Moose tongue by the way."
